To ensure stable production of critical compressor components, Sperre has invested in a new CNC machine and robot cell at its facility in Ellingsøy.
The new installation will be used to produce crankshafts and counterweights – critical components in Sperre compressors.
It is not limited to a single machine, but represents a complete machining setup combining CNC machining, automation and quality control. Together, these elements form a production system designed for stability, flexibility and long-term reliability.
Automation for stable and efficient production
The robot system is connected to the factory’s crane system but can also operate independently as a stand-alone unit. This flexibility ensures that production can continue even if the crane system is temporarily unavailable.
Inside the cell, the robot moves along a rail system with access to six trolley stations containing components ready for machining. The goal is for the production cell to operate autonomously for up to 72 hours.
Designed for reliability
The new machine has also been strategically placed near the facility’s CMM measurement machine, where all components undergo precision control measurements after production.
Together, these systems help ensure consistent quality and reliable production of critical compressor components.
Choosing a familiar and reliable partner
After evaluating several suppliers, Sperre chose a Japanese quality producer of CNC machinery as the supplier of the new machine. The decision was based on previous experience with similar machines already in operation at the factory. Choosing the same supplier allows Sperre to benefit from existing knowledge and operational experience with similar machines.
The machine is equipped with several advanced monitoring systems, including:
Tool breakage detection
Measurement probes with inspection
Tool wear monitoring
Camera-based monitoring systems
These features contribute to maintaining the high precision and reliability required in compressor production.
Marking the start of a new chapter
To mark the arrival of the new machine, Sperre recently invited all employees to an opening event at the factory.
The investment represents another step in strengthening Sperre’s production capabilities – ensuring reliable manufacturing of the components that power compressors operating on vessels around the world.
